The 1996 World Ski Championships were held in the Sierra Nevada.  The ski resort, known as Sol y Nieve (translated means Sun and Snow), is just over an hour's drive from Buenavista.  The skiing season in the Sierra Nevada starts on 1st December until April and, with Sol y Nieve being the most southerly ski resort in Europe, the air temperature is so much warmer.  Although a fairly small resort in comparison to other European destinations it has numerous runs of varying difficulty and prices compare well with those of other European resorts.  It can also boast being Europe's sunniest ski resort and one of the very few places where it is possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe in the Mediterranean in the afternoon!
